SET DESIGN PRODUCTION
The 2025–2026 season at the Teatro de la Zarzuela has closed with a new production of El Gato Montés, the popular Spanish opera by Manuel Penella, which premiered in Valencia in 1917. Proasur was responsible for the set construction for this INAEM production, directed by the acclaimed German director Christof Loy and with set design by Manuel La Casta.
The production ran for fifteen performances between 10 and 28 June 2026 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, with musical direction by José Miguel Pérez-Sierra.

Manuel La Casta’s design created a set of great formal austerity, with spaces of considerable height that required high-precision construction and finishing. To achieve the Andalusian atmosphere called for by Christof Loy’s staging, Proasur produced large whitewashed walls with an Andalusian texture, standing 8.50 metres high and built using over 1,000 m² of themed panelling.
Among the most distinctive elements of the project was the creation of a full-scale diorama of the chapel of the Real Maestranza, including a full-scale reproduction of its entrance grille. These pieces required highly precise technical interpretation and craftsmanship to faithfully recreate the original architecture on stage.
One month of production
The execution period was one month, a tight schedule that Proasur’s team delivered successfully for a project of this scale. The technical complexity of this commission and the profile of the production place it among the most demanding work the team has undertaken in the performing arts. The presence of Christof Loy — one of the most significant figures in European opera direction — added a special dimension to the project. It forms part of our track record in scenography production, alongside other singular projects in theatres and cultural spaces.
